Advanced Clinical Training Program in Family Therapy

The Advanced Clinical Training Program in Family Therapy, previously known as the Graduate Diploma in Family Therapy (Clinical Practice), is a two year clinical training program, completion of which contributes towards eligibility for Clinical Membership of the Australian Association of Family Therapy. The program is an accredited program with the Australian Association of Family Therapy, meeting their training requirements for Clinical Membership. Initial application is for the first year of the program.
The program is for practitioners who want to think and work systemically. The primary aim of the program is to produce skilled clinicians by developing the basic skills, theoretical knowledge, and techniques of working systemically with families.
The course is structured around an adult learning model in which participants are expected to identify and work towards achieving specific learning objectives.
The course itself incorporates didactic input, experiential learning, skills development, role plays, seminar format.
Course Structure
The Advanced Clinical Training Program is offered in a distance education modality. Briefly, this means that course participants will attend Clinical Intensives, and submit regular summaries of guided reading material.
The training program is structured around four training modules or semester units, which are offered over a two year period.
In addition to the Clinical Training Program, one clinical supervision module is offered to those who choose to pursue Clinical Membership of the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT). Supervision modules are offered by negotiation, either individually or in groups of no more than six participants.
Two specific options and locales are offered:
Newcastle, NSW
This program is centred around two 5-day Clinical Intensives each year, one in First Semester (usually March/April), and one in Second Semester (usually August). The Clinical Intensives are held in Newcastle. Attendance at the Intensives is required. Course participants will also be required to present a tape/disc of a clinical session with a client.

Sunshine Coast, Queensland
This program offers the same content as the Newcastle program, but is structured around 7 weekend Clinical Intensives which are spread evenly throughout the year. These Intensives are held on the Sunshine Coast. Again, attendance at the Intensives is required. This program also involves six 3-hour Clinical Workshops, which are also spread evenly throughout the year. Course participants will also be required to present a tape/disc of a clinical session with a client.

Course content (1st Year)
The first year of the program includes the following modules:
- Introduction to thinking and working systemically
- The therapeutic process
- Schools of Family Therapy
- Family life cycles
- Achieving change
Course content (2nd year)
The aim of the 2nd year of the program is to develop further, each participant’s professional expertise, theoretical knowledge, and self-understanding as practising therapists. Specific attention will be given to selected contextual applications of working systemically. These are developed in conjunction with course participants, and include issues such as family violence and abuse, issues of childhood and adolescence, attachment and attachment disorders, mental illness, working with couples, loss and grief, suicide, multi-problem families, feminist perspectives, sexual assault, blended families, LGBTQI etc.
Course participants can join the program at the beginning of any semester

Application
Places on the courses are limited. Preference is given to those who are currently working in a counselling environment, and who wish to expand their knowledge and practice of working systemically.
Some places are available for those who are not currently working in a counselling environment, but who wish to develop their knowledge and skills of working systemically. As a general rule, applicants should have a tertiary qualification in the helping professions.
The cost for the 2019 program is $1975 per semester.
